P6 PSLE Maths practice — find the weak topics while there's time

Primary 6 Maths is a race between the syllabus and the calendar. New topics — ratio, algebra, circles, average — are still being taught into Term 3, while prelims and PSLE loom at the end of it. There is no slack in this year for "we'll sort it out during the holidays".

The most useful thing a parent can have in P6 is specificity. "Weak in Maths" is unactionable; "shaky on changing-ratio problems and fraction division, solid everywhere else" is a plan. PSLE results are reported in Achievement Levels (AL1–AL8), and readiness estimates built from practice evidence are exactly that — estimates on current form, not promises. But they beat guessing, and they tell you where the next hour of practice should go.

What to watch this year

Ratio and algebra are new and PSLE-heavy — both reward early, spaced practice over last-minute cramming. The P5 backlog matters just as much: fraction and percentage gaps from last year resurface inside P6 questions wearing new clothes. And from mid-year, retention is the game — a topic mastered in February needs to still be there in September, which is why re-testing weeks later matters more than re-teaching.
