P5 Maths practice Singapore — the hardest jump in primary school

Ask parents which year of primary Maths hurt, and the answer is usually Primary 5. The syllabus takes its biggest single step: unlike fractions, four-operation decimals, percentage from scratch, rate, and word problems that chain three concepts into one question. Content taught in P5 makes up a large share of what PSLE examines a year later.

The P5 pattern to watch for isn't failure — it's slippage. A child who scored comfortably in P4 drifts a band lower at the first weighted assessment, and nobody can say which topics are leaking. Generic revision ("do more assessment books") spreads effort evenly across everything, including the topics your child already knows. What actually helps is a specific read: which of the ten topics are strong, which are wobbling, and which of last term's topics quietly faded.

What to watch this year

Fractions and percentage are the two topics with the longest consequences — both flow straight into P6 and PSLE. Rate is new and short, easy to under-practise. And Term 3–4 word problems are where the year's skills get combined for the first time; they're the best early-warning signal for how P6 will start.
